Have a schedule for your first day. I find it is always helpful to know what to do on your first day, instead of aimlessly punching random wood. The schedule I use is: 1. Collect wood. 2. Make wooden pickaxe. 3. Mine stone. 4. Make all stone tools. 5. Collect MORE wood. 6. Go collect food 7. Dig into a mountain or hill to create a house underground, or dig up some dirt to build a dirt hut. 8. Place down a chest, crafting table, and furnace. 9. make sure you have a window(to see if it's day) and door (to keep out monsters. You kinda need one.) 10. Put some logs (NOT WOODEN PLANKS) in the furnace and cook them to make charcoal. 11. Make torches and put them down. 12. Hang out in your house. It's night.
